Vēveri is a group of farmer-craftsmen homesteads characteristic to Piebalga region, history of which can be dated back to the 16th century. The main source of income in the 19th century was weaving, 2 to 4 looms could be found in each house. By the start of the “Mērnieku laiki” (1870’s and 80’s), when the population of Piebalga starts to buy up land from the manor, Vēveri has 8 homesteads: Kalna Vēveri, Lielvēveri, Lejas Vēveri, Streinvēveri, Jaunvēveri, Vecvēveri, Mazvēveri un Virolvēveri. In the modern day the arrangment and buildings of theese 8 homesteads.
In order to preserve the created cultural landscape with the old-fashioned homesteads, buildings, roads, trees – monuments of the work and daily life of the Piebalga farmers in the place, where they are created in the 1980’s Vēveri rural exhibition of the Ethnographic Open Air Museum of Latvia was opened. 6 of the old farmsteads are under the museum control, but Lejasvēveri and Jaunvēveri are in the private property of the heirs.
In the exhibition not only the traditional farms of Piebalga can be seen, but also different tools of farmers and craftsmen, household items, that are extraordinary to a modern person.
At the highest peak of the Vēveri hill (226m above see level) it’s possible to see windmill built by the owner of Kalna Vēveri homestead. From its gallery and upper floor it’s possible to see the bird’s eye view of Vēveri and the wide landscape of Piebalga.
