Cēsis New Castle

Cēsis New Castle, together with the territory of the Castle manor historic centre and the Livonian Order medieval castle ruins makes one of the most important and romantic historical attractions of Vidzeme region and Eastern Baltic. New Castle is one of the few 18th-century Castle manor houses in Latvia, built into the medieval fortification system – instead of the tower and the gate protection building. Its history covers almost five centuries.

Since 1949, the Cēsis History and Art Museum has been established in the building of the New Castle. The interior exhibition tells the story of the history of the owners of the Castle – the Count Sievers family - and presents the interior culture of the18th-19th century as the essential part of the Baltic German cultural heritage. On the Large interior walls you can view restored artistically high-quality rose motif freehand painting, as well as the example of the Biedermeier Interior Style in the Coffee room. Exhibition "Cēsis - Latvian historical symbol" in an interactive way invites visitors to walk through the centuries and presents the relevant facts and events that left their impact not only on Cēsis, but also to the whole history of Latvia and even Europe.

The Lademaher tower of the New Castle is considered to be one of the earliest examples of neo-Gothic style in the architecture of the manors in Latvia and it offers wonderful views of the castle and the town embraced by the Gauja National Park forests. The flag in the tower proudly certifies that Cēsis is the cradle of the Latvian national flag.

Cēsis New castle contains a special room for families; have a facilities for changing exhibitions. One of the most popular souvenir shop in Cēsis is located in Castle visitors centre.
